What’s black and white and “red” all over?

When I was a youngster, that was an oft-posed riddle, and of course the answer was  “a newspaper.”

When I ventured into the newspaper business early in the 1950s, newspapers were indeed read all over and were limited to black and white. Color hadn’t yet entered the picture. Behind the black- ink headlines and black-and-white photos, colorful characters abounded on newspaper staffs – much more-so than today.

What follows are my recollections of six decades of working with unforgettable characters in unforgettable settings as newspapers churned onward through more than a half-century of ever-increasing technology.  I’ve also included some other stories, about the family and the era, that may be of interest.
